When you copy a photograph freehand, your brain keeps substituting what it knows for what it sees. You draw the eye you remember instead of the shape actually sitting on the paper, and the likeness slips away before you have finished the second eye. A grid stops that. It cuts the picture into small squares, and inside a single square there is no face, no horse, no cathedral — only a curve entering at one edge and leaving at another. Shapes that small are easy to judge, and if every square is right, the whole drawing is right.
The method is centuries old. Renaissance workshops used a gridded frame called a velo to transfer studies to panel, sign painters used it to scale lettering, and animation studios used it long before projectors were cheap. It is still the most reliable way to move an image from a small reference onto a big surface, whether that surface is A4 cartridge paper or a shop wall.
It is also a training tool rather than a crutch. Most people who grid their references for a few months find their freehand proportions improve, because they have spent that time looking at edges and angles instead of naming objects.

More squares means more accuracy and more time. Fewer squares means faster work and more of your own hand in the result. Start from the subject, not the paper size.

If you are unsure, a good rule is that the smallest feature you care about — an eye, a window, a paw — should sit inside roughly one to two cells. Any smaller and you are copying noise; any larger and you are back to guessing.
Effects change how the photo is rendered under the grid, and whatever you see is what gets downloaded.
The grid only transfers correctly if the proportions match. Two things keep that true.
If the download is 20 columns wide, your paper needs 20 columns too — whatever size they end up being. To find your cell size, divide the width of your drawing area by the number of columns. A 30 cm wide sheet with 20 columns gives 1.5 cm squares. Mark those along the top and bottom edges, join them with a ruler, then repeat for the rows.
A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm, so a 20-column grid across the short edge gives you 10.5 mm squares. Chart paper at roughly 56 × 71 cm takes 14 columns at 4 cm a square, which is a comfortable size to rule with a long ruler. A half-imperial sheet at 38 × 56 cm sits neatly at 19 columns of 2 cm. Pick the column count that gives you a round number and the ruling takes minutes instead of an hour.
A photo that is 3:2 will not fill a square sheet without stretching. Either crop the photo before you load it, or accept a margin on your paper and rule the grid inside that area rather than edge to edge.

For very large work, transfer in stages: grid the photo at 8 columns, block in the big masses on the wall or canvas, then re-grid a single region at 16 columns to refine a face or a sign.
